Application of the Flexijet 3D measurement system in the restoration of a residential staircase

Introduction to the project


Restoration of older buildings often comes with challenges due to structural irregularities that have developed over the years. In this particular project, the client decided to renovate the staircase of a three-story house. The goal was to install a new, perfectly fitted steel railing that would seamlessly adapt to the existing conditions—requiring high precision in both measurement and fabrication.

Challenges:
During the restoration, it became clear that the staircase walls were uneven, the tread heights varied, and the angles were inconsistent. These conditions required extremely precise measurements, as even minor errors could lead to installation issues, increased production costs, or the need for costly on-site modifications.

Solutions:
Using the Flexijet 3D system, a detailed scan of the staircase—spanning all three floors—was carried out. Flexijet 3D enabled the accurate capture of all critical parameters, such as the exact inclinations of the staircase flights, the position and height of each tread, and the optimal mounting points for the railing and its supports.

The data obtained was imported into CAD software, where a detailed design of the new railing was created, including all necessary dimensions, angles, and specific attachment points. The precision of the Flexijet measurements eliminated the need for a preliminary test installation, which is typically required in complex projects like this.

Steel pipes were cut precisely to the dimensions and angles defined in the CAD drawings. The components were then carefully welded and finished with a powder coating process, which provided corrosion protection and a visually appealing finish. It is important to note that once steel has been powder-coated, no further on-site modifications are possible. For this reason, the measurement accuracy provided by the Flexijet 3D system was crucial—eliminating the need for any trial fitting.

The finished components were delivered directly to the site, where they were installed quickly and without any complications, fitting perfectly into the existing structure of the staircase. No additional adjustments or corrections were needed during the final installation of the railing.
